How to interpret your word count

Words are counted by splitting text at whitespace. A hyphenated phrase with no spaces counts as one word; languages written without spaces may need a language-specific counter. Character totals include spaces, with a separate total that removes whitespace.

Sentence counts use full stops, exclamation marks, and question marks, so abbreviations and decimal numbers can affect the result. Reading time is an estimate at 200 words per minute, rounded up to at least one minute. Use the destination form’s own counter when enforcing a submission limit.
